French toast has been around forever for a reason. It’s quick, comforting, and made from ingredients people already keep in their kitchen. When done right, it comes out soft in the center with a light, golden crust on the outside. You don’t need special bread or complicated steps to get there.
In my opinion, this French toast recipe is all about control. The batter should be smooth so it coats the bread evenly. The pan needs steady heat so the toast cooks through without burning. Once the bread hits the pan, patience matters more than anything else. In this French toast recipe, I tried to keep things straightforward. Regular sandwich bread works perfectly. The batter comes together in minutes, and the cooking process is easy to follow. If you respect the heat and don’t rush it, you’ll end up with French toast that tastes delicious.
Ingredients
For the Batter
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk (or cream, if preferred)
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt (a small pinch)
- A splash of vanilla extract
For Cooking
- Sliced sandwich bread (about 6 slices)
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil (per batch)
- 1 teaspoon butter (per batch)
For Serving (Optional) Maple syrup or honey

Directions
For the Batter
- Crack the eggs into a wide, shallow pie plate. Break them up gently with a fork.
A pie plate works best because it makes coating the bread much easier. - Add the milk, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla.
- Whisk everything together with a fork until the mixture is smooth.
Make sure there are no streaks or lumps of egg. A smooth batter gives you even flavor and texture.
Set the batter aside and give it a quick stir before dipping the bread.
This keeps the sugar and spices from settling at the bottom.

Cooking the French Toast
- Place a frying pan over medium heat.
- Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil and 1 teaspoon of butter to the pan.
Butter adds flavor, while the oil helps prevent burning. - Let the fat heat up fully.
When the milk solids in the butter start to lightly brown, the pan is ready. - Quickly dip a slice of bread into the batter. Coat one side, flip, then let the excess drip off.
- Place the bread into the hot pan and let it cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes.
Don’t move it around. Let the pan do the work. - Flip when the bottom is golden brown, and the bubbles around the edges slow down.
- Cook the second side for another 1–2 minutes, then remove from the pan.
- Add a little more butter and oil before cooking each new slice.
- Repeat until all the bread is cooked.
Two eggs will coat about six slices of sandwich bread.

Serving
Serve the French toast while it’s still warm and finish it with maple syrup or honey. If you want something extra, a light dusting of powdered sugar adds a nice touch. It pairs well with fried eggs and crispy bacon on the side. Add a small bowl of fresh fruit, and you’ve got a perfect breakfast.
There you have it. A French toast recipe that’s simple to make but tastes delicious. This is one of my favorite breakfast recipes. It’s also beginner-friendly and easy to make. So give it a go, I know you’ll love it.
